How to Choose the Best Window Grids for Your House Style

Mar 15, 2019

Choosing the Best Window Grid Pattern for Your Merridian Home Style

While some homeowners prefer plain, clear replacement windows, window grids can be an excellent way to add to the aesthetic of your home. When you order replacement windows from ProVia through Johnson County Siding & Window Co., you not only get stylish windows but a variety of customized style options, including various window grids. But if you choose window grids, it’s important to find options that suit the style your home already has, whether by seamlessly adding to it or complementing what’s already there.

Colonial Style

Colonial style homes are most popular in the Northeast, but you can find some of them even here in Merriam. These homes have a broad, bold look and straight rows of windows, usually with painted shutters to the side. The porch may contain stately white pillars that help to create the feeling you’ve stepped through time. The windows of colonial style homes are significant, and so are your window grids. With colonial style homes, you almost always want to choose square grids that form nine equal small panes of glass, stylish but classic. Double-hung windows are what you’ll most likely see with this style.

Craftsman Style

The craftsman style, however, is a little more modern and a little more likely to march to the beat of its own drum. These houses are smaller, with roofs that have multiple, sometimes overlapping gables. They may incorporate different types of exteriors, such as a mixture of siding and stone, and they often include a porch. Window placement tends to vary from house to house. However, when it comes to the windows themselves, here again, double-hung is the most frequent style, along with the occasional picture window. One popular grid style for craftsman houses, is to include straight vertical lines on the top third or so of the window while the bottom two thirds are left unobstructed.

Tudor Style

Tudor style homes stretch back to a time even before the popularization of colonial homes, and yet they remain popular to this day. These homes are often uniform in color — typically contrasting dark browns and cream colors — and even in shape. The stucco siding is often overlain with unique wood patterns crossing from one side of the wall to the other, so this is a style of home that can only be helped with window grids. While square grids work for Tudor style as well as colonial, the style you’ll see most frequently is a diamond grid. In fact, diamond window grids are almost exclusively seen on Tudor style homes.

Modern

But what if your home has a more modern look? The point of mid-century modern and minimalist modern, is to let in as much light and offer as extended a view of the outdoors as possible. So, it follows that for these types of homes, the best window grid style is no window grids at all. Let the original style of your windows shine through, or better yet, let the natural beauty of the outdoors shine. For modern style homes, the best windows are windows that you almost don’t notice.
