Vinyl siding FAQs

Mar 20, 2017

When people are trying to decide on siding for their home, they have many choices. Vinyl offers distinct advantages—and it’s certainly the most affordable option. Here are answers to frequently asked questions to help you better understand what vinyl siding can do for your home.

Does vinyl siding fade or become discolored?

Sunlight can fade the color over time, and darker colors are more susceptible because they absorb more heat. Vinyl siding can become discolored if chemicals—like deck cleaners and lawn chemicals—splash onto the surface.

You can protect and preserve your vinyl siding’s color by cleaning it once or twice a year, and covering any areas that are close to where you are painting, staining, or applying any chemicals.

What kind of maintenance is involved?

Minimal maintenance is one of the best features of vinyl siding! At least once a year, clean it with a pressure washer, or use a long-handled, soft-bristled brush. The cleaning solvent is equally simple: use a combination of 7 parts water to 3 parts white vinegar, or three parts water to one part chlorine bleach.

How long does it last?

The life of your home’s vinyl siding will depend on the quality, thickness, weather conditions, and maintenance. You should expect 20 to 40 years, and some companies, like Mastic, offer a limited lifetime warranty.

Do I have many color choices?

Homeowners are often surprised by the wide array of color choices now available in vinyl siding. Some styles, like Quest and Cedar Discovery, offer 35 different color choices.

How much will it cost to install vinyl siding on my home?

The total price for the siding and installation will depend on the size of your home and the type of vinyl siding you choose. We don’t like to ballpark, so we offer a free estimate if you’ll provide some basic information.
