Trends in Front Doors

Front doors have typically enjoyed a position of prominence, owing to the fact that it’s what draws guests into the home. While for some it is a style statement, for others security forms the primary objective, and many see no harm in a front door achieving both ends. Over the years, front doors have undergone a lot of changes in design and construction.

Fiberglass front doors
A lot of front doors today are made from wood, and that is a traditional practice dating back to the time when wood was perhaps the only building material available. Technology has improved, and there are now fiberglass doors that give the appearance of wood without any of the potential problems, such as damage by natural elements or termites. Unlike wood, fiberglass doors do not sustain dents and are energy-efficient as well. Because of the extremely low maintenance requirements, the front door market is moving in this direction.

Steel front doors
Steel is another choice and very much in demand because of its strength. It avoids the problems associated with wood and isn’t expensive either. It makes for a clean, elegant look and offers security like no other.

Less panels, simpler lines
While an increased number of panels and lines added much to the grandeur and decorative aspect of a door in earlier days, people are now opting for less panels and lines to achieve a more minimalistic look. Gone are the days when the six-paneled entry door was in vogue and pretty much the de-facto standard for front doors. Side lighting and transoms are also increasingly being seen along with simpler doors.

Electric glass
As residential areas become more crowded, the demand for privacy increases. One way homeowners balance this against the requirement for natural light streaming in through their front door is by opting for electric glass, which changes from opaque to clear and vice-versa by just flipping a switch.

Color
Brighter and bolder colors that match with a home’s exterior are increasingly becoming the preferred choice. Colors in demand this year include cranberry, deep blue, turquoise, golden sand, and bronze. Among those wanting a simpler look that grabs less attention, mauve, grayish purple, deep navy and soft blue-gray are the colors of choice.
