A Cure for Exterior Home Growing Pains in Olathe, KS
Olathe Home Needed to Emerge from Its Awkward Stage After Add-Ons
- The client’s primary goal: remedy the architectural imbalance of the home’s exterior.
- The house also needed an update from its 1970s style to enhance its curb appeal.
- Extensive collaboration with our design experts led to extraordinary results.
- Low-maintenance and energy-efficient materials also helped bring this house into the 21st century.
From Neighborhood Misfit to Alluring Beauty
It all started in the 1970s, when a lovely home was built in Olathe, Kansas. Over the years, the owners expanded the house to meet their needs, choosing different cladding materials and design elements for each addition. The result was not flattering, to say the least. It took several weeks of research and extensive communication with the client – including several meetings with our professional color and texture designer – for our experts to develop a rescue plan. The client explored various design options, and eventually approved a 3-D architectural CAD rendering that revealed the home’s potential to become a neighborhood showplace after an “extreme” exterior home makeover.
Our Magical Elixir Recipe
The first step in the transformation process was to remove two layers of vinyl and stucco siding from the home’s exterior, as well as stone and wooden beams from the front porch area. To protect the home from water infiltration, we installed custom-made flashing on the foundation, stoops, roof area, windows, and doors. We then securely wrapped all the walls with GreenGuard® RainDrop® Housewrap to ensure an airtight fit. With adequate moisture protection in place, we were ready to proceed with the exterior home makeover the client had approved.
We installed manufactured-stone siding on the front façade, back wall, and detached garage, creating a balanced look for the home. We covered the remaining wall areas with James Hardie Select CedarMill fiber cement lap siding, which was complemented by Hardie’s rich Cobblestone trim, thus adding textural elements and visual interest to the home’s exterior. Other upgrades included an energy-efficient ProVia® fiberglass entry door for the garage and Westbury aluminum railings added to the front porch.
Our Expertise Made the Difference
Restoring a symmetrical appearance to this home involved overcoming several challenges that were not purely cosmetic. For example, our installers had to compensate for various wall depths that were created as room additions were added. However, our meticulous attention to detail paid off with extraordinary results that exceeded our expectations – and the client’s!
