Attract hummingbirds to your garden

Jun 20, 2016

A hummingbird visited flowers.
Hummingbirds are a welcome addition to a garden. The The tiny, colorful birds dart rapidly from flower to flower, gathering up the sweet nectar they love. Hummingbird feeders with nectar will bring in birds, but they require regular cleaning (at least once a week). Certain plants also attract hummingbirds to a garden, without the extra maintenance. So, if you live in the Kansas City region and want to welcome more of these feathered beauties, here are some native shrubs, flowers, and vines to plant or hang:

* Agastache
* Bee balm
* Cardinal flower
* Honeysuckle
* Red columbine
* Coral bells
* Delphinium
* Hollyhock
* Cardinal vine
* Petunia
* Fuchsia
* Salvia
* Weigela
* Crabapple tree
* Horse chestnut tree
* Northern catalpa tree
* Red buckeye tree or shrub
* Roses of Sharon bush

Butterfly bush and trumpet vine will also bring in hummingbirds but some varieties of these plants can be invasive, so be careful!
Hummingbirds are known to be attracted by the color red, but it’s the nectar more than the color that appeals to these birds. Feel free to add lots of color to your hummingbird garden or to focus on just a few. The hummingbirds will feast when you serve up the sweet treats they’re seeking.

"The lap siding on the front of our home was failing so we decided to replace it all with James Hardie fiber cement siding. We knew this would be a job that needed to be handled correctly. We were apprehensive about hiring someone to handle what we knew would be a huge undertaking and were very pleased with the way this company performed. We would definitely recommend them.”
