Fall Exterior Maintenance Checklist for Your Mission, KS Home

Prepare Your Mission, KS Home for the Fall Months & Colder Weather

Fall is properly here, and with it comes fall maintenance. While the weather is still mild and pleasant, it’s the perfect time to reexamine your home and get it in prime shape for the harsher months of winter. This can include your siding, your roof gutters, your windows and doors. Any exterior of your home that’s constantly exposed to the elements could use fall maintenance this year. But if you’re unsure where to start, here’s a maintenance guide.

Siding

Summer can be a rough time of year if you have poor siding. It can pull away from the home, leaving the opportunity for leaks in the midst of fall showers. It can warp, crack, or peel. Some siding problems can be fixed. However, if you find that you’re having major issues with your siding every year, maybe it’s time for a siding installation. Talk to a siding installation contractor about better options, such as James Hardie, Mastic Vinyl, or stucco and stone.

Roof

Take a look at your roof while standing on the ground. Do you notice any missing shingles or discoloration? Fall is a season of heavy rains, and any weak spots could lead to leaks later in the season — or in the winter. You should also take a look at your roof gutters, clearing out any debris and sealing up any potential cracks to make sure they’re prepared for fall and winter storms.

Windows

During the colder, stormier months, your windows will allow you to enjoy your outdoor views without having to be outdoors. So, you want to make sure they’re clean. Wipe down the glass and check the frame for any warping or cracking. Windows also play a large role in your home’s insulation, so check their seals and weatherstripping to make sure everything is as it should be. Much like some siding problems may call for new siding installation, if your windows are causing more trouble than they’re worth, you may want to order replacement windows.

Doors

It’s important to check the weatherstripping for your doors as well, and to keep thresholds clean and clear of debris. If you have sliding patio doors, make sure there is no debris stuck in the track that is keeping it from running efficiently. You can test the air flow through your doors by lighting a candle nearby and seeing if the flame pulls in a particular direction. If it does, your door is letting too much air through.
