It’s pretty easy to get caught up in the excitement of renovating your home; however, you won’t want to forget about your dog! Not only do you want to ensure that your dog is comfortable during the renovations to your home, you’ll want to make sure that it is safe as well. The following are a few tips for keeping your dog safe during a home renovation:

  • Isolate your dog – If you can, set up a space on the opposite side of your home for your dog and make sure it can’t get out. For example, use a baby gate in order to separate your dog from the rest of the house. If this isn’t possible, you can also consider boarding your dog at a kennel for a few days or asking a friend or family member to look after it during the renovation.
  • Test old paint for lead – If there is lead in your paint, you’ll want to make sure your dog is away for the day when it is removed via scraping or sanding. Lead paint can flake and turn into dust, which your dog can ingest. Lead poisoning is incredibly dangerous, even for dogs.
  • Keep products with isocyanates away from your dog – Products such as spray foam insulation, tile adhesives and polyurethane glues all contain isocyanates. If your dog ingest it, it can end up expanding in the dog’s stomach. Take your dog to the vet right away if this happens.
