How to choose the best color for your home’s siding

Table of Contents

The style of your home is the first feature most people notice, followed by the color—unless the color is so bold that it’s hard to miss! We’re often asked by homeowners how to choose the best color for their home’s siding. Like any other decorating decision, it’s a personal choice. Still, we have some basic guidelines that help when considering your options.

The architectural style

Certain home design styles lend themselves to a particular palette. A colonial or Cape Cod, for example, is beautiful with white siding, when paired with a richer color for the accents (trim, shutters, railings). A bungalow, cottage, or contemporary architectural style home provides a broader range of colors.

The home’s size

Dark, bold colors can be overwhelming on a large home, while light colors don’t let smaller homes stand out within the landscape.

Roof color

If you don’t intend to change your roof any time soon, be sure to consider how the roof’s color will work with your choice of siding color. A warm-colored roof (brown, beige), for example, will be complemented nicely by a warm tone on the siding. Light colors will be the best choice for a home with a dark roof. Also, don’t choose a siding color that blends with the roof. A contrast is a better choice.

The neighborhood

Take a look at the homes around you. What colors are the exteriors? Your home should accent the neighborhood. It doesn’t have to blend in seamlessly if you want to go in a different direction, but avoid a color that makes your home stand out, as opposed to being outstanding!

Go bold with the accents, not the siding

If you’re drifting toward a brighter or bolder color, consider using it for your home’s accents—the trim, railing, doors, and shutters. It’s far easier and less expensive to change the color of those accents later than the color of your home’s siding!
