How to Choose Your Garage Door

Table of Contents

Your garage door is the face of this space, and it plays a major part in your home’s curb appeal. Step back and take a look. Does your garage door enhance the look of your home? If you think you could do better, consider your options, so you know how to choose your garage door.

Style

Today’s garage door designs range from traditional to contemporary, and simple to ornate. Browse the gallery of garage door styles so you can then narrow down your choices to designs that best complement your home.

Material

Steel is a popular choice for garage doors because it’s durable, corrosion-resistant, lower in price, and requires little maintenance. Wood doors, like the Signature Carriage line, add natural beauty and can be matched to the front door. They are long-lasting when properly maintained. A good compromise is a steel door with a wood grain surface, like the Impression Collection from Overhead Door.

Insulation

A good garage door offers energy efficiency by keeping cold or hot air outside, where it belongs. Garage door insulation should have a high R-value for the thermal efficiency. Look for foamed-in polyurethane sandwiched between two layers of steel, bulb-type weather sealing on the bottom of the door, and sealing between each section in the door. Thermacore doors meet all of this criteria.

Safety

Your garage door is a large, moving object. You need to protect your family members and your home from possible accidents by choosing a garage door with safety features. For example, the door should reverse immediately on contact with anything other than the floor. Some doors now offer a photoelectric safety beam that detects an object in the path of the closing door and automatically triggers the reverse mechanism.

Be sure to check all garage door safety features–including the manual release–every month.
