Learn More About How Centurion Stone Siding Came to Be

Aug 14, 2015

Centurion’s stone siding has become a popular choice in Kansas City due to the fact that it’s much lighter and more affordable than real stone while still being just as durable and offering the same beauty that stone boasts. In fact, Centurion’s stone siding will last for decades, no matter what climate it is used in. How exactly has Centurion been able to accomplish this with their stone veneer? To find out, let’s take a look at how their stone veneers came to be:

Spaces by Moscow Mills Stone, Pavers & Concrete Centurion Stone of St.Louis via Houzz

The idea for stone veneers first occurred in 1950. The problem with these earlier stone veneers was that they all looked pretty much the same. The quality of the stone veneer was also entirely dependent on the craftsmanship of the mason attaching it. The broken slab look was an idea that came soon afterwards. The process involved building a 3 foot by 3 foot frame with 1-inch sides. Sand was then added to the box and then covered with plastic wrap before being filled with wet cement. The slab was then removed and broken into pieces once it cured. The pieces were then fit back together while the joints were filled in with masonry mix in order to create the broken slab look. The problem with this method was that the end product didn’t really have a realistic appearance.

After several other methods were attempted in order to create a realistic stone-like veneer failed, it was decided that doing so on-site was impossible and that a factory process was the only way to go. Eventually, it was possible to match the design and color of any stone when creating a stone veneer.
